Self Build Lighting Ideas

We have many tips and suggestions for adding space and light to your home. For electrical lighting, follow some basic rules. Always keep a copy of your electrical completion certificate safely with your other house documents.

Try to be creative with self build lighting ideas. Apart from aesthetics, give a consideration to outside and security lighting. Don’t forget lights in cupboards and in the loft. Another important instruction is to clearly mark circuits on the consumer unit.

Many sites are sold as “serviced plots’ where the connection to the sewers and possibly other
services has already been made with “tails” or connections left within the plot. If this is not the case a connection will have to be made by obtaining the necessary approvals and making the appropriate payments.

Consider whether you need an option to dim your lights. Also, decide if you want lights that can be switched on and off from different parts of the house. You must keep in mind that your build cannot encroach upon the requirements of a low level of daylight interior illumination if the existing building is 20 years or older.

Also, consider alternative water and waste systems such as reed bed sewage disposal or the use of “gray’ water or rain water for flushing the toilets and for the garden.

Self builders should also ensure that they have sufficient power points and that the lighting is designed to give them the ambience they want in their new home. If necessary, seek an expert’s opinion before seeking a contractor to do the fitting work.
